Sevvai dosham
What it is, where it arises, and every exception that cancels it — each one named and explained. Nothing on this page needs your birth details.
Every judgement on this page is a classical rule, stated plainly, so you can check it against a chart, and so can anybody who told you about it.
What cancels it
These are the conditions under which the affliction does not apply at all. They are not a footnote: measured across real charts they cancel it more often than not, and they are the half almost every other page leaves out.
Mars in a sign it owns
When Mars stands in Mesha or Vrischika, the signs it owns, it raises no dosham for marriage, whatever the house. Astrologers accept this cancellation more widely than any other.
Mars at its strongest, in Makara
Mars at its strongest, in Makara, cancels the dosham outright: at full strength it does no harm.
Mars in a movable sign
In a movable sign Mars does not settle long enough to do harm, so the dosham does not apply.
Mars in a sign owned by the Sun or the Moon
In a sign owned by the Sun or the Moon, Mars does no harm.
Jupiter beside Mars
Jupiter beside Mars steadies it, so the dosham does not arise — the most respected cancellation on the list.
Mercury beside Mars
Mercury beside Mars lifts the dosham.
The Moon beside Mars
The Moon beside Mars softens it enough that the dosham does not stand.
Jupiter's gaze on Mars
Jupiter's gaze on Mars is enough on its own to clear the dosham; Jupiter need not sit beside it.
Mars burnt out, too close to the Sun
Mars too close to the Sun is burnt out, and it lacks the strength to do harm.
Mars working for the chart, for a Karka or Simha rising sign
For a Karka or Simha rising sign Mars helps the chart, so it does not act against it.
Mars in a star South Indian practice holds harmless
South Indian practice holds Mars harmless for marriage in certain stars. No named source backs this one, so it carries less weight than the cancellations above.

Where it arises
This one is not judged from a single point in the chart. Software that checks only the lagna clears people who are not clear, so every reference point below is checked and each is reported separately.
| Judged from | House | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| the lagna | 1 | 0.35 |
| 2 | 0.45 | |
| 4 | 0.45 | |
| 7 | 0.70 | |
| 8 | 0.65 | |
| 12 | 0.50 | |
| the Moon | 1 | 0.30 |
| 2 | 0.35 | |
| 4 | 0.35 | |
| 7 | 0.60 | |
| 8 | 0.55 | |
| 12 | 0.40 | |
| Venus | 1 | 0.28 |
| 2 | 0.32 | |
| 4 | 0.32 | |
| 7 | 0.55 | |
| 8 | 0.50 | |
| 12 | 0.38 |
The weights are ours, not the tradition's. They record how firmly each judgement is held in the sources, and how much those sources disagree, and they are shown rather than folded silently into a score.
Check your own chart
Nothing above depended on your chart, because none of it is about you yet. This is: give your birth details once and you will be told which of these placements you actually have, which of the exceptions apply to you, and what that leaves — free, with the reason beside every line.
